Optical Disk Drive Testing

Note  This content applies to the Windows Logo Kit (WLK). For the latest information using the new Windows Hardware Certification Kit (HCK), see Windows HCK User's Guide on the Windows Hardware Dev Center.

Note  You must use the latest version of the WDK to compile your driver for it to pass testing and obtain a logo.

The procedures in this section describe how to test your optical disk drive for proper functionality with the Microsoft Windows operating system. These procedures use the Microsoft Windows Logo Kit (WLK) and Driver Test Manager (DTM). To ensure the full functionality of the device, you must run all of the tests that the DTM identifies as required for the device. If your product provides bus-specific support, you must run the appropriate bus-specific tests in addition to the standard tests.

Using the Test Procedure Help Topics

Note  This content applies to the Windows Logo Kit (WLK). For the latest information using the new Windows Hardware Certification Kit (HCK), see Windows HCK User's Guide on the Windows Hardware Dev Center.

The test procedures are divided into the following types of topics:

Preparing: The preparing topics describe how to configure the system or systems for logo testing.

Running: The running topics describe how to run the tests for your device or system.

Troubleshooting: The troubleshooting section provides information to diagnose optical disk drive failures, warnings, and errors.

Run Time

Note  This content applies to the Windows Logo Kit (WLK). For the latest information using the new Windows Hardware Certification Kit (HCK), see Windows HCK User's Guide on the Windows Hardware Dev Center.

Approximately 24 hours. This time depends heavily on the amount of profiles that the drive supports because the tests are run for each profile.

Hardware Requirements

Note  This content applies to the Windows Logo Kit (WLK). For the latest information using the new Windows Hardware Certification Kit (HCK), see Windows HCK User's Guide on the Windows Hardware Dev Center.

The following hardware is required for optical disk drive testing. Additional hardware might be required if the test device provides bus-specific support. To determine whether there are additional hardware requirements, see the test description for each bus-specific test.

  • One computer that has the following items:
    • Dual-core or equivalent processor (Windows Vista / Windows XP)

    • Quad-core or equivalent processor (Windows Server 2008 / Windows Server 2003)

    • 4 GB memory (Windows Vista / Windows XP)

    • 6 GB memory (Windows Server 2008 / Windows Server 2003)

    • One logo-compliant ACPI BIOS, with ACPI enabled by default

    • For Windows Vista and later operating systems, BIOS configuration and SATA controller support of SATA AHCI mode

    • One dual-channel ATA/ATAPI controller that is implemented on the motherboard

    • One host controller of the same bus type as the optical disk drive

Note  The USB controller must be able to wake the system by using ACPI mechanisms.

    • One DMA-capable hard disk drive with at least 10 GB capacity

    • Network adapter

    • One monitor, one keyboard, and one mouse

    • Two identical optical disk drives

Note  If the optical disk drive that you are testing is read-only, you must connect a writer drive in addition to the two drives that you test.

    • Appropriate cables for connecting devices

    • Appropriate host controllers for the optical and hard disk drives

  • Blank media that the test device supports

Note

Testing a device to obtain a logo for Server Device qualification requires that the test system supports four processors and at least 1 GB of RAM. These system capabilities are required for the Dynamic Partitioning (DP) Simulator and Test and the Multiple Processor Group test to run. You do not need a system that actually supports DP capabilities or has more than 64 processors to test your device.

If you use a pool of systems to test devices, at least one system in the pool must contain four processors and at least 1 GB of RAM. Additionally, that system must contain the device and driver under test. The schedule runs on all systems in the pool, as long as the driver is the same on all systems.

For those tests that do not include a driver to test, the DTM scheduler constrains the DP test to run on the default system. You must manually configure this system to have multiple processor groups. The default system is the first system that is listed. In this case, you should make sure that this first system meets these minimum hardware requirements.

Note  Except for Para-Virtualization drivers (as defined by Logo Requirement Policy-0020), you cannot test physical devices and their associated drivers being tested for Server Logo or Signature in virtual machines by using any form of virtualization. This requirement exists because not all virtualization products support the underlying functionality that is required to pass the tests that relate to Multiple Processor Groups, Device Power Management, Device PCI functionality, and so on.

Software Requirements

Note  This content applies to the Windows Logo Kit (WLK). For the latest information using the new Windows Hardware Certification Kit (HCK), see Windows HCK User's Guide on the Windows Hardware Dev Center.
