tell us what you think

As one of the public-facing members of MacBU, I get a lot of feedback about our products. I get it when I visit customers. I get it through the comments in my blog. I get it via that 'contact me' link over on the right side of my page. I'm always happy to answer questions and accept feedback [1], of course. Anyone who's met me knows that I'll talk about all things Macintosh, including MacBU, for as long as anyone will listen to me.

Today, the MacBU is opening up a new method of sending us feedback. The new product feedback website is available on Mactopia beginning today. This is an anonymous way for you to communicate with us. Feedback submitted to this tool is routed to the appropriate team within the MacBU. I can't guarantee that we'll respond to everything that we receive, but I can assure you that several people (including myself) are monitoring the feedback that we receive and handling it appropriately.

So go over there and tell us how much you love the new Sync Services support in Entourage. Tell us about a bug you found. Tell us how this blog is your absolute favourite. (Since it's anonymous, I can't offer to buy you a beer or coffee in exchange for that, so you might want to skip that one.) Tell us what you think. We're listening.

[1] That said, I am behind in my email again. I'm trying to catch up after being out of the office for most of March doing field work, so it's gonna take me awhile to dig out. So if you're waiting on a response from me, it's not that I'm ignoring you, it's just that email from my manager gets a response first.

Glad this is back - the most recent option of bouncing to generic Microsoft "report a bug" page was really uncool when you wanted to make a suggestion. This definately improves the potential for communication with your users.

This is really a minor issue, but the post reminded me of something I noticed while using Office 2004. VirtualPC is the only application that ships with Office 2004 that does not have a "Send Feedback" menu item in its Help menu. In fact, I don't think it has such an item anywhere in its menus. It's such a small thing, but until now it was frustratingly difficult for me to find the right place to report feedback on VPC. The Help menu is the first place I go to look for a Feedback menu item of some sort in Mac apps. It would have saved me quite a lot of time.

Microsoft need only look at some of the issues mentioned on 'betaloque' here is a quote on the 'all-new-praise-us' feedback page.

"...Why on earth does Microsoft feel that anonymity is a bonus here? If you want to report a bug, you want to make sure that Microsoft’s engineers will be able to get back to you to ask for more information or for sample files that illustrate the problem. ..."

"...their daily dose of anonymous and useless “Your products are great!” messages, but the rest of us would like a proper facility for reporting bugs...."

One potential use of that feedback form would be to tell us that you'd like another mechanism for submitting bug reports.

Or you/MacBU could go to that particular blog and look in the section Macintosh/Microsoft where hundreds of bugs are documented for reference purposes, and macBU could start fixing some of the most annoying onces. (my $0.02).
