Skeena Indigenous font family
Overview
Skeena Indigenous is a font family designed with an indigenous-first approach to supporting the languages of the native peoples of North America using alphabets derived from the Latin script. The default forms of characters and available language-specific variant forms prioritize the orthographic and typographic norms of indigenous languages, rather than those of European settler languages. Skeena Indigenous is intended to provide a focal point for engagement with indigenous communities and language revitalization organizations. It is a template for a particular way to approach indigenous language support in fonts, which will hopefully inspire and assist other font makers to support these languages.
The Skeena Indigenous typeface was designed using documentation from many sources including individual indigenous experts and language keepers, cultural and language preservation organizations in the USA and Canada, and typographic and technology consultants working with North American languages.
Skeena Indigenous is available as a family of 12 static fonts in a range of weights, or as two weight-axis variable fonts in roman (upright) and italic styles. The fonts are available as device/desktop TTF files, and as WOFF2 format webfonts.
