Image Diff Error Message

While I was preparing the Image Diff Hands-on-Lab for MEDC I ran into a painful error. It took me quite some time to figure out what was going on and I wanted to spare you the agony.

As you might already know, Image Diff is a command line tool that compares two offline post-FBA images. I started Image Diff from the command line “Idiff.exe /source:C:\HOL318\SP2Image /dest:C:\HOL318\FP07Image /output:C:\HOL318\UpdatePackage /BinaryCompare:ON” and got the following error message: “Requested registry access is not allowed”.

I had pointed Image Diff to a pre-FBA instead of a post-FBA image. The error message is very misleading and I already filed a bug to make the message more meaningful when trying to compare pre-FBA images.

By the way, my MEDC session “Windows© XP Embedded Image Difference Engine and updates for Windows © XP Embedded” is on Thursday May 3rd from 8.30am to 9.45am. The Hands-on-Labs are accessible throughout the conference. I hope to see you there.
