Got OSS embedded components?
What's the coolest app or driver package you've componentized?
I've done some AntiVirus programs (Kaspersky & FPROT) as proofs of concept before CA released their componentized version of eTrust. Some testers in our lab a couple years ago created some crude components for Unreal Tournament, Age of Kings and some other games. We use those for testing purposes in the lab on Fridays (ahem, yeah that's the ticket). We've got TONS of componentized third party drivers we use internally.
I started componentizing WinAMP (the Lite version) on a trip to China last year but then lost several hours of dependency analysis work i did for it so i gave up. Of course we won't talk about the MSDE component, if you were following the newsgroup threads a couple years ago you probably know about that issue.
One of our MVPs Heidi Linda (links to her MVP profile) created an Apache component when her company couldn't or wouldn't deal with the IIS dependencies i guess. The Apache component can be found on Brad Comb's site www.xpefiles.com (Brad is another of our stellar MVPs).
Thinking about the Apache component the other day got me to thinking about any other OSS features that may have been componentized but not exposed to the rest of Embedded community. Has anyone componentized MySQL or FireFox for instance? I'd love to try out components for those and compare their behavior and dependencies to their Microsoft counterparts then show it to the respective teams in Microsoft as incentive to help them clean up their own dependencies. If you have fully componentized versions of those let me know, I have something for you from my office <grin>. No cheating like having FBA run an install package during setup, they need to be fully componentized.

Sorry, never heard of it. We haven't componentized any biometric devices including Microsoft products. Are these the MS devices you're referring to:

If so, it might be an interesting challenge to check out. I'll order some HW and post back here with the results. Note that this would be low pri compared to our existing work load at the moment so it may take a while. - Anonymous

Yep, that's it. I believe it is DigitalPersona's U are U repackaged for MS. I've given up on componentizing it, it's just not worth the time. I just install it before fbresealing the image... - Anonymous

Thanks, Lynda's trying to get some of these devices from the internal team that was involved in integrating this stuff.
Now, this will be super easy for me if there are inbox drivers for these in Longhorn, figuring out the dependencies that way is simple.

I've got the same problem. I've been requested to package the scanner into the image, and I don't have MSI installed, so I can't even install the image before sealing... Any chance you can post back here if/when you can do it? - Anonymous
