Mobile Web Design

Over the past few weeks I've been approached by a number of customers looking to build Mobile web sites for customers to access their services.   This has ranged from Airlines to Retailers.

If you are looking to provide customer services this obviously presents a challenge in that you can't really guarantee what device the customer will be using.  (Hopefully Windows Mobile :) )

Over the past few years previous efforts have proven that writing to the lowest common denominator (ie WAP) means that everyone gets a poor experience....  however with the growth of more powerful devices with great browsers there is the opportunity to create rich web sites for customers to consume your services.

One of my colleagues forwarded me a link to this book - "Mobile Web Design" by Cameron Moll.

It's a great book that gives real practical advice on how to create mobile web sites easily!

You can even download some sample pages from the book before you buy it.

Jason, We have a browser plug-in that supplies contextual information in real time from the mobile device to the web server. You can see it running on Windows Mobile on our site. It can even stream real time GPS data, along with device data, all from inside the browser. The customer doesn't have to learn anything new and the web site provider gets the look and feel right everytime. In addition we figured out how to modify Pocket Internet Explorers menu structure in real time and can now add contextual menus in real time - this allows the content provider to free up the screen for more important things. Check out the web site (www.5o9inc.com) for more details, screen snap shots etc. Cheers, Peter
