Other IE Bloggers
I wanted to point out that many of the IE team members have their own blogs and frequently post there about IE topics. Some recent examples: Chris Wilson talks about CSS compliance, Jeff Davis writes about IE’s command line parsing as well as how ActiveX controls and popup blockers interact, and Justin Rogers blogs about implied tags in HTML. The RSS part of our team, of course, has their own team blog. More of our team members’ blogs are listed in the bottom of the right column of this page.
Check them out for even more juicy details about IE!

I've also got some really good stuff regarding the Pop-up Blocker and how ActiveX controls should interact with it. - Anonymous

The only problem with the Justin Rogers blog is that his last post is almost one year old. - Anonymous

Wow, talk about damage-control... Was all the fuss over the CSS compliance (or lack thereof) symptomatic of bad PR? - Anonymous

I am growing increasingly frustrated with this issue.
I CANNOT select "save target as" to download files online! Clicking the links only streams what I am trying to download. How do you use IE7 to download a link to a video or sound file?????
Someone has to have some information... - Anonymous

@EricLaw
No link at all works. Nothing happens when I click "save target as" because it's grayed out on the "right-click" context menu....
Is this not a common issue, then?
I wondered if it was by design, like some new security feature.
I can't think of any particular links, but when I go to a site and it says "right click/save target as to save this file" I do not have the option.. - Anonymous

Hi,
I just installed IE7 Beta 3 and I must say this is a great browser with a very well designed UI. Congratulations!
I tried to follow the feedback procedure given at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/default.mspx but connect.microsoft.com doesn't seem to have a Internet Explorer 7 connection?
Any way the bug (or rather loss of functionality) I want to report is this:
The Ctrl-ScrollWheel short cut to change the text size now zooms instead of changing the text size. This breaks the ability to change text size in other apps which host IE like HTML Help (hh.exe).
IE6: Could use Ctrl-ScrollWheel to change text size in HTML Help
IE7 Beta3: Ctrl-ScrollWheel has no effect in HTML Help.
Is there a workaround that I'm missing?

Chris Wilsons blog is buggy.
I cannot submit postings there using IE from work IE6 or at home IE7.
Rather a poor showing for a blog from the IE program manager.
Can't be bothered to redownload FF to post this to him though. Saw someone else had the same problem on his blog and did bother to post it with FF. - Anonymous

What is Q4 of the year? - Anonymous
August 15, 2006
For some odd reason and after a LOT of researching online, I have found a plausible flaw with IE 7 Beta that I am using.
Any Javascript page, (one for eg: chrisvschris.com), does not load. It gives a generic error message saying: "Object doesn't support property or method".
Now the same Javascript page, without making any changes to the script whatsoever, opens and runs perfectly in IE 6 as well as Firefox.
So IE Developers, any help or assistance on this or will I be the first to put Microsoft IE team at its wit's end?
Please respond. Anxious for a fix.
Thanks. - Anonymous

Thanks for your feedback. You are not missing anything.
In IE 7 our primary method of increasing readability of the page is the zoom feature, which now uses the CTRl+ mousewheel. We have gotten alot of feedback and requests for changing the text size. We are looking into better supporting this in our next release.

Is there any good developer source for Add on development?
I searched, MSDN has just a pointer. It looks like it is based on COM and more towards C++.
Any plans to move it to managed code? - Anonymous
August 15, 2006
No they don't plan to move to managed code, because if they would move, adware/spyware companies would stop giving them money, cause it would be much harder to break into user systems. - Anonymous
August 15, 2006
Any plans for Firefox to rewrite itself in Java? No? Hmm, I wonder why not.....
The "Netscape rewrite" (which led to Firefox) would've been a perfect opportunity to showcase how managed code environments such as Java are ideal for performance-critical, complex client applications such as web browsers.
</sarcasm> - Anonymous
August 15, 2006
@Fduch: I like managed code too, but it's not a panacea. The idea that Microsoft could benefit from adware/spyware is nonsensical.
@123,@Pari: There are a bunch of resources for developing addons, including some that are managed code, and some that are just Javascript.
See http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/09/06/461675.aspx for a few pointers.
@hAl: I've notified Chris about the problem on posting comments to his blog. This is something that a bunch of folks hit when they add Technorati search to their ASP.NET based blog. (see e.g. http://blogs.borland.com/NickHodges/archive/2006/07/28/26296.aspx)
The fix is to move the form tags such that they don't nest (HTML doesn't permit such nesting).
Thanks for the note! - Anonymous

John, Microsoft is more likely to "fix" your issue if you 1> Explain exactly what it is, and 2> File a bug.
As it is, it's hard to tell you apart from a random blog spambot. - Anonymous

"CSS... CSS... CSS...
While CSS is not fixed, my company will still avoid IE at all costs."
This is almost akin to saying:
"I will not live until all diseases are cured/prevented!"
Microsoft is doing all they can. Web Developers probably make up a very small percentage of all users. If they would release IE7 with only CSS fixes/additions, no one would get it as it wouldn't improve anything.
People have gotten by with developing websites for IE6. Which missing CSS feature is so horrendous that a "company" will avoid it all costs. I can't believe a 'professional' would make such a ridiculous statement. - Anonymous

"(1)
Issue:
Developers currently waste an enormous amount of time developing to force IE to behave, the way that the other (spec following) browsers do."
On all websites I've developed I spend about 10 minutes getting it to work in IE. And my XHTML/HTML and CSS validate.
And this is indeed my job, I get paid for it and I enjoy doing it.
IE's "problems" are a minor issue and it is being improved as we speak. I fail to see what all the fuss with IE is about? It's a part of this environment.
Perhaps the reason I don't make a fuss about it is that I also do application development which is quite different from website development. I understand how hard it can be to fix bugs/issues with rendering, etc. A lot of other people don't. - Anonymous
