Off to Auscert 2008 next week..

Ok so next week (Sunday in fact) I'm off to AusCERT 2008.  I go to this conference every year and this year I have a speaking slot instead of just sitting on the stand answering questions.  We are also going to be having much more AusCERT08_STAND_render activity going on this year on the stand and we have a cool stand layout as you can see from the picture.  Out theme this year is "Our Security Rocks".  Why this theme?  Well we are going to have an XBOX 360 on the stand with a Guitar Hero competition going on..Get it?

So if you don't really follow security in Australia you're problem wondering what AusCERT is. Well it stands for Australian Computer Emergency Response Team.  They are the national body for handling security incidents in Australia and every year they have a conference at Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast and as usual Microsoft is a Platinum sponsor.  We have lots of folks coming out from Microsoft in the US including Scott Charney who is doing the keynote this year.

So this year given that I'm speaking and doing demo's I thought I would share with you what I'm bringing to the conference and what I plan to talk about and demo.  So lets start with the hardware.

Hardware

  • 1 Lenovo T61P Laptops with 4GB of RAM - This is my primary work laptop that I also have a second drive configured with System Center Mobile Device Manager Demo in a box setup.  I'm going to be using this one on the stand to show how you can better secure and manage your mobile devices.
  • 1 Toshiba A7 Laptop with 3GB of RAM - This machine is acting as my Vista SP1 client in my NAP demo using 802.1x authentication.
  • My server - Of course I'll have my server which I run Windows Server 2008 x64 Enterprise edition.  It has an AMD Phenom chip in it which gives me 4 processors and 8GB of RAM.  I'm also running Windows Hyper-V on it as well.
  • 1 HP Procurve 2600 Switch - This is used for my NAP demo using 802.1x authentication
  • 1 Linksys Wireless G Travel Router - Used for the System Centre Mobile Device Manager demo

Software Infrastructure

Well I'm going to have a lot of moving parts but it's necessary for a good demo.  Below is a breakdown of what I'll have running:

  • Host Machine  Windows Server 2008 x64 Enterprise Edition with the Hyper-V role enabled.
    • Virtual machines
      • Domain Controller - this machine is running AD, DNS, DHCP and is acting as my Enterprise PKI.  Running Windows Server 2008 x64 Enterprise Edition
      • Network Policy Server - This server is running as my NAP server using 802.1x authentication. Windows Server 2008 x64 Enterprise Edition
      • Hub File Server - Used as a file server for installing server applications - Windows Server 2008 x86 Enterprise Edition.
      • SCCM 2007 - Using SCCM 2007 SP1 for integration with NAP and for deployment of patches and updates.  Windows Server 2008 x86 Enterprise Edition
      • Server Core Branch Office File Server - File server in branch office running Windows Server 2008 x86 Enterprise Core Edition.  This is a much more secure option for servers running in branch offices.  Much more reduced footprint and no GUI.  So means less patching and more secure.
      • Server Core RODC - Used as a branch office Read-Only Domain Controller and is running Windows Server 2008 x86 Enterprise Core Edition.  Ideal Domain Controller option in a branch office because we only do one way replication to the RODC in the branch site.
      • Terminal Server WDS - Used as a Terminal Server and Windows Deployment Server to remote applications to my clients and to deploy new VM's if needed.
      • Vista Client's 1 and 2 - Used for various purposes as clients
    • Physical Vista Machine - Used as client to show 802.1x Authentication with my Network Policy Server.
    • System Center Mobile Device Manager - My Lenovo T61P will be running 4 VM's as depicted in the diagram here to demo System Center Mobile Device Manager.  I'm going to show how to better scmdmmanager Windows Mobile devices using this new tool.  I've been playing around with this for a couple of days and man I have to say it rocks.  With the new Windows Mobile 6.1 you can now Domain Join your device and manage through group policy just like you would any other machine on your network.  There are over 125 group policy settings to make managing these devices much easier than they ever have been in the past.

Well that's a lot don't you think?  If you're going to be at Auscert 2008 this year please drop by the stand to see a good demo.  This is the list of what we'll be demoing throughout the conference.

  • Data Protection and Device Security with Windows Mobile 6.1 and System Centre Mobile Device Manager
  • Microsoft's next generation of Security Products
  • Windows Server 2008 - Network Access Protection with 802.1x authentication
  • Securing your applications through rapid threat response
  • Data Protection with Windows Server 2008 AD Rights Management
