IE6 and IE7 VPC Refresh Available
Just a quick blog post to let you know we’ve updated the IE6 (XP SP2) and the IE7 (XP SP2) VPC images that you can use with Virtual PC 2007.
You can find the images at https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=21EABB90-958F-4B64-B5F1-73D0A413C8EF&displaylang=en. From here, you can download either the IE6 image or the IE7 image. Both images are pretty much identical to the ones we published back in April, they contain all of the updates through last week, and any included tools are the most up to date versions. Both images are set to expire on December 7, 2007.
If you’re unfamiliar with these VPC images, check out this blog post for more details about what they are, how they work and why you might want to use them.

The IE6 image has a hardcoded proxy server address (haven't checked the IE7 image), so if you're having connectivity issues, follow these steps:
- Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings
- Untick "Use a proxy server for your LAN" option
- Click OK

Is this blog ever going to report on IE development again ?????Anonymous
August 21, 2007
@hAl No, it won't. At this time, Microsoft has no definite plans about developing new versions or even subversions of Internet Explorer. They intent "in general" to release new browser some time in future, but yet they have no project, roadmap or even distinct idea of what features will be implemented and who will participate in development. There certainly will be no news about IE in the next few years. Maybe after the release of next Windows version ("Vienna") Microsoft will only begin to develop their new browser.Anonymous

@rc Actually no, that's not true. We are actively working on the next version of Internet Explorer; we have nothing to announce yet.Anonymous
August 21, 2007
Haha... RC apparently believes everything he reads, and makes up a bit too. Unfortunately, what he chooses to read is also made up, so he lives in a funny little fantasy world.Anonymous

@Chris Wilson "We are actively working on the next version of Internet Explorer" Unfortunately, there is no real confirmation of this assertion.Anonymous
August 21, 2007
@RC-- Heh. "Confirmation" is provided by the continued existence of this blog and the IE team. You might have missed one of the stages of childhood development. Object persistence, usually developed early in childhood, is when the child comes to understand that things that are not presently in view still continue to exist. Admittedly, IE seems to be taking an unfortunate page from Apple's playbook; "don't announce until it's ready."Anonymous

@googler "Yeh, this may be true, but without a single blog post on this blog to confirm that, and indicate most importantly what spec items are being fixed (esp. the DOM ones), what items are being added (esp. the DOM ones), and what new features MS is planning, all you have for IE8 right now is vaporware." You can have all of those things and still end up in vaporware. The IE team obviously can't even post speculation on what the would like to have since anything that might even get a mention will be taken as law of what to expect, even if it was just a hopeful delivery. Unfortunately, this leaves the team with not saying much. Which has happened. A lot.Anonymous

Hi Developement Team and others reading! I spent quite awhile designing a theme for www.businessportalserver.com and have it running under FireFox and IE6 fine, and got it tow work under IE7... or so i had thought. I'm still running XP, i have vista, but only Home Premium (so i miss out on the Virtual PC, and need to text my websites in IE6) - so i was suprised when i hoped up the website in IE7 under Vista, to find the banner was no longer showing correctly. Anyone got suggestions to get around this? It's very frustrating that when a design that requires some tricky css comes up - that IE7 doesn't perform the same; I don't know how to check for Vista to ensure it is showing right across platforms. Cheers for advice! AlexAnonymous

August 22, 2007
@FAW I have the same problem. Could you get now a a connection with the IE6 image?Anonymous
August 22, 2007
Mark, although there are some users still on IE5 or IE5.5 they are for all intensive purposes dead. Spending any effort on them is a complete waste of your time. I would recomend a quick detection (if you think those users are going to access your site/app) and redirect to a page that indicates their browser is woefully out of date, and not secure. provide links to the latest IE, and/or some of the modern browsers like Firefox, Safari, and Opera. On that page though, add a link where they can email you.. they may have an odd reason why they can't upgrade, so let them contact you to advise.Anonymous

All I want to know is where MS sends their error reports when IE7 crashes. I have searched the web and this site and found no information - I KNOW THIS IS A NEWBIE-TYPE POST, but I have no choice. IE7 crashes on my system 10 to 12 times a day when I am simply clicking on links from trusted e-mail sources. I send an error report each time and yet I do not even know if MS is concerned that their browser is less stable than any other available. HELP! HELP! HELP!Anonymous

When I do a CTRL + H to bring up History, then right click to delete an item, then click the OK button for the (are you really, really sure), why does it close my history window? Please tell me this bug is fixed in IE 8 because if you want to delete 5 or 6 items it is very time consumingAnonymous

I'd like to STRONGLY second the motion for CSS3 multiple background images ASAP. This shouldn't be in IE8; this should be in an update to IE7, preferably tomorrow. The other browsers would have to follow suit. Making a resizable frame with fully graphical borders requires EIGHT extra markup elements, which makes the HTML incredibly unwieldy and breaks the principal of separating content from presentation. As soon as I heard about this proposed features I thought, "why wasn't this introduced AGES ago?" Hmm... Safari ALREADY supports it (along with rounded corners using a proprietary attribute). C'mon, are you REALLY gonna let Apple get such a big one over on Windows? ;) Anyways, huge thanks for making the VPC images available. I've seen some links to the standalone versions but they really don't work properly; very buggy, and the standalone IE6 won't run the developer toolbar. Still, I'd recommend them for a quick test of how well your sites degrade in legacy browsers, since it's a good indicator of accessibility.Anonymous

@EricLaw Thganks for the response, i didn't try removing the doc declaration - but still, as far as i've tested the website is showing up the same in firefox, IE6, IE7(XP) and safari - It surely couldn't be displaying something 'right' in IE7(Vista) that the developers didn't make work in IE7(XP). Either way... the same version of browser that displays differently across versions of an operating system is a bit difficult - there's no simple way to do "If Vista". It seems like a bug to me, either IE7(XP) or IE7(Vista) is doing something wrong, because the banner is showing up with what looks to be 1em either side of it more in margin (however the margin is in percent). Perhaps i'll cut it down and find the exact bug and post. AlexAnonymous

What about enabling onclick upon option tags in the next release? Option tags on IE currently allow only 3 events, if I am not mistaken, among which an onselectstart that on an option tag apparently makes little sense, whereas an onclick would easily permit things like storing the last selected option index without looping the menus. thank youAnonymous

i just want to see a FULL support for CSS2.1 AND CSS3.0! and why do transparant png-24 images not work in IE7? (they arent transparant!) don't fix the security but implement the CSS! don't care about security it's just one big whole. full CSS support is what we want! (and also let visual studio (asp.net) generate valid code!) oh and EricLaw: removing a doctype is NOT an option!!Anonymous

Alas, it's hard to tell if "true hAl" has any relationship to "hAl". Ignoring security is not an option. The fact that removing the doctype fixes Alex's bug implies that his document works in quirks mode, which suggests that he needs to tweak his CSS to match strict mode.Anonymous

@John A. Bilicki III I'm not sure what Alberto is trying to do exactly, but I know that I have wanted to either add the onclick event inline (in generated output), or, add an eventlistener, to the option (when generating a DOM) Either way, I have to second Alberto's request, I too would like to see the option tag (and all its issues) fixed in IE8.Anonymous
