The web browser ballot

500x375[1]

This is the proposed ballot screen that European users of Windows 7 will see and it looks like Europeans will get the full version of Windows 7 after all

In the wake of last week's developments, as well as continuing feedback on Windows 7 E that we have received from computer manufacturers and other business partners, I'm pleased to report that we will ship the same version of Windows 7 in Europe in October that we will ship in the rest of the world," deputy general counsel Dave Heiner said in a statement.

So there you have it, there E box will become a collectors item after all…thankfully!

full details at the Microsoft On The Issues blog where there are some interesting points

  • the screen will not be presented to Windows users whose default is Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera or any other browser
  • If our proposal is accepted by the Commission, we will update Windows XP and Windows Vista machines throughout Europe with the consumer ballot screen
  • Users could return to this page anytime to install the latest browsers or learn more about them

The ballot screen looks OK, but i really don't see what all the fuss is about. As long as an operating system comes with a browser that allows me to get on the internet, i can install another of my choice within seconds. Opera may have made more productive use of their time and money working on making their browser better, rather than pursuing Microsoft through the courts, which really only really succeeded in making the lawyers a little richer. I personally have all of the major browser loaded on both my Mac and PC and i use which ever one has the features i need and is proving most reliable at the time, this often changes as new versions come out.

Here's an idea. If you don't like Internet Explorer, buy a Mac. Sad to see the politicians in Europe are as stupid or as easily bought as the one's here.

Jack, that's a pretty elaborate way to get a different browser. you can just go to Firefox or indeed Apple and download one for free....lots of people do :)

i love Opera its great has some options that i dont like but the concept of all its functions are great! but put into practice is a bit different lol. but i love firefox, sure its not the safest, sure its not got all the features a safari or explorer but its simple, fast, effective and i love the icon, i kno thats a wierd thing to bring to the table but ull all admit that its a really cool icon. besides no one likes apple, theyve made money off freeware shouldnt they go to court?
