Introductions
About time for an introduction methinks - rather rude of me not to have done it before now. My name's Mike and I manage the Developer Community Evangelism team here at Microsoft UK. That means I have the pleasure of working with such luminaries as Mike Pelton, Mike Taulty, Marcus Perryman, Stephen Turner and Sean Puffett. You can see pictures of us all here, well except for Sean and Marcus who look suspiciously like their MSN Messenger buddies.
There is a viscious rumour going around that all it takes to get into our team is to be called Mike - it certainly helps. We actually operate a simple points system along the following lines:
Called Mike? | +100 points |
Called Mark? | +100 points |
Name begins with M? | +50 points |
Know anything about .NET? | +10 points |
Know anything about SQL Server | +10 points |
Know anything about Web Services? | +10 points |
Know anything about Halo 2? | +5 points |
Know anything about cars? | +5 points |
Know anything about beer? | +5 points |
Know anything about money? | You wouldn't start here |
The threshold for entry is 25 points so basically Sean and Stephen had to work a lot harder than the rest of us.
So what is it we do? Well we're charged with getting people enthused about the .NET platform, Visual Studio, SQL Server and the like. So we spend our time delivering technical presentations, working with communities, writing blogs, maintaining the UK MSDN website, delivering webcasts and creating nuggets amongst other things. Our next big event is the Technical Roadshow brought to you in conjunction with MSDN and Technet. This is a two day event in four locations around the UK (see below). We have a Developer Track with one day devoted to Visual Studio 2005 and another day devoted to SQL Server 2005.
- Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th April 2005 - Edinburgh, The Corn Exchange
- Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th May 2005 - Birmingham, National Motorcycle Museum
- Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd June 2005 - Harrogate, Harrogate Pavilions
- Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th June 2005 - London, Earls Court Olympia
Why not come along and join us? It'll be fun. You can register here.

Darn - I only score 20 points. No wonder I've moved on :)
