.DOCX, .XLSX, .PPTX etc. are already XML files.
I'm aware that docx is XML, but what I want is to convert 2003 version DOC files into a single XML file (2003 version). My clients primarily use DOC files from 2003, so I want to convert them without any loss into XML format compatible with the 2003 version.

A quick solution with PowerShell script but VBA macro should work too or another language for coding.

If you open the .doc files in a recent version of Word you can convert to .docx.
If they have the compatibility package on their Word 2003, they would be able to open and edit those in Word 2003.. I know one was offered at least until 2008 and it may be possible to find yet.
